For city populations, the best source for U.S. Cities is the U.S. Census Bureau.  The url is http://www.census.gov/

For general information about cities and to be able to see the city and its surroundings on many different scales, Google Earth is a good resource.

If you are looking for the history of a city to figure out why it is located where it is, then you will need to do searches for the specific city.  Many cities have websites that include information about their history.

Another source of information is the CIA World Fact Book which has tons of information about every country and some cities in each.   The url is https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/.
